Rainforest Alliance

El Salvador has some 165,000 hectares dedicated to coffee growing ,of which 95 % are shaded. This means that the coffee plantations , with their various production systems ,comprise forested areas , or " Coffee Forest ". These cover 8 % of the country , making them a viable alternative for the conservation and improvemente of habitat for wild flora and fauna , as well as conservation of other natural resources such as water , air , and soil.

Conscious of the environmental degradation that the country is suffering , the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources of El Salvador proposed working together with coffee growers to preserve the biodiversity in coffee forest.

This is how the project " Promotion of Biological Diversity Conservation in the Coffee Plantations of El Salvador " ( "Coffee and Biodiversity" for short ) was born in 1997.It is financed by the Global Enviromental Facility (GEF) , its funds are managed by the World Bank , and it is implemented by the Salvadoran Coffee Research Foundation ( PROCAFE ).

The project fits a category favored by the Biological Diversity Convention and is implemented within the Mesoamenrican Biological Corridor ( CBM ) , specifically in the buffer zone of the El Imposible National Park and the Los Volcanes natural area.
